Synopsis:
The Beksan Menak Koncar is a male
solo-dance.
The Beksan Menak Koncar depicts the noble knight Menak Koncar
from the Javanese saga about Damarwulan, the grasscutter, and his opponent Menak
Jinggå.
The story is situated in the 15-th century on Java, but the
choreography of this dance originated from the 19-th century.
Menak Jinggå
threatens the kingdom of Måjåpahit, because the queen has refused to marry him
being a vassal. The noble and gentle knight Menak Koncar is the queen's
messenger. He is often on his way and he terribly lacks the presence of his
beloved princess.
The remembrance of his beloved one constantly fills his
mind. Some of the gestures of his dance express his doubts whether he has to
travel on or to return to her. He is not strong enough to banish her out of his
mind. He even imagines that they will soon gather and he starts to prepare
himself by dressing himself with most attractive accessory. The knight Menak
Koncar's mood is constantly changing up and down.
This dance symbolises the
inner, dual battle of man. One always has to choose between duties and longings
of the heart.
